Prices for melting scrap on the ship-breaking market in Alang, Gujarat, lifted by a modest ₹100/tonne on 22 September 2025, as HMS (80:20) was assessed at ₹30,800/tonne ex-yard. The day-on-day increase was assisted by improved trading activity in semi-finished and finished steel products, as well as renewed buying interest from scrap consumers. A handful of suppliers responded to this increase in demand by raising their offers accordingly. Despite the day-on-day increase, though, on a week-on-week basis, prices were still lower than the ₹31,100–31,200/tonne levels seen on 15 September.

Outlook:

The Prices are likely to remain range-bound over the near term unless there is a material shift in downstream steel demand or sourcing activity. There also remains some downside price correction risk related to seasonal and global demand aspects; however, the post-monsoon and festive season could see infrastructure-led steel consumption elevate and provide support for scrap prices. Also on the horizon are policy enhancements, such as ship recycling credit notes, which may also support and build the trust of recyclers over time.
