The shipbreaking scrap market in Alang, Gujarat, will be closed until at least December 16, 2025, following the disruption caused by government-announced demolition activity in and around the ship-breaking region. Residents living near the aforementioned demolition zone were involved in a series of protests and representations to authorities seeking immediate termination of the demolition process. Due to the closure of the shipbreaking market, there have been no additional trades or price assessments made after December 13; the last reported price assessment was ₹30,600 per tonne for Alang melting scrap. Participants in the market have advised that this closure has halted both yard activity and movement of material; therefore, it has prevented any further development of the price range for Alang melting scrap.
Outlook
The market will probably continue to show signs of weakness until administrative clarifications and resolutions are achieved pertaining to local conditions. If operational activity resumes under conditions that support smooth operations, Alang melting scrap prices will most likely experience a range within the same price ranges that we have recently seen price support from manufacturers to manufacturers, and will also continue to remain constrained. However, continued disruption could create a less available supply of scrap and add a small amount of upward pressure on the price level. Meanwhile, potential future regulatory actions or riots by residents will likely continue to impede market sentiment.
