As of August 22, 2025, the ship-breaking melting scrap price at Alang was assessed at ₹31,900 per tonne. The prices declined by ₹100 per tonne, and average trade activity was observed; thus, there were discussions of offering fresh discounts as mentioned by one of the traders,  but no announcements have been made yet.

Melting Scrap price in August has witnessed a stable trend where prices fluctuated discreetly between ₹31,600 and ₹32,000 per tonne, with ₹31,800 on August 1. There has been a narrow fluctuation, which reflects a balanced market sentiment with steady trade activity, revealing cautious optimism among both the suppliers and buyers amid ongoing supply-demand dynamics in the region. 

But Alang's scrap prices have experienced significant volatility over the past year. The prices have been down by 15-18% on a y-o-y basis, as they varied in the range of ₹36,000 and ₹38,000 per tonne in Aug 2024.

Outlook:

There has been an increased focus on green ship recycling standards, a gradual rise in vessel demolition volumes, and steady demand for semi-finished steel. Thus, Alang's ship-breaking sector appears poised for a potential medium-term recovery. The cautious confidence is expected to support price resilience.
